Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
